Since early diagnosis improves your chances for successful treatment, it's important for renal lesions to be found as soon as possible. Peking Tung Shin Tang Chinese Medical Hospital uses the most advanced techniques and technology to guarantee an accurate diagnosis of IgA Nepropathy.

iga diagnosis

Your doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history, and perform a physical exam. If your doctor suspects you may have IgA Nephropathy, one or more of the following tests can be done to confirm the diagnosis.

IgA Nephropathy Tests

Urine test. It can indicate the abnormal symptoms, such as blood and protein in urine.

Blood test. After doing this test, we can observe increased levels of the waste product creatinine in your blood. The IgA level in your blood is also elevated.

Kidney function test. It mainly suggests the level of serum creatinine, nitrogen and trioxypurine. The estimation of renal function need to be accurately calculated using formula.

Kidney biopsy. This is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of IgA Nephropathy. A special biopsy needle is used to extract small pieces of kidney tissue for microscopic examination to determine whether there are IgA deposits in the glomeruli.

The development of IgA Nephropathy may be linked to genetic defects in immune response or immune-complex clearance. However, they do not cause disease by themselves. Some type of antigen must be present in the body, such as bacterial (streptococcus), or viral (certain type of influenzas), or endogenous (produced by the body itself). Genetic predisposition, however, make some individuals more likely to get affected of IgAN upon exposure to certain antigens.

iga cause

Persons with IgA Nephropathy rarely have a family history of kidney disease. Usually, there may be a personal or a family history of other immunologically-mediated disorders in like asthma, celiac-sprue, or psoriasis, especially if these have been treated with immunosuppressants as corticosteroids.

IgA Nephropathy affects both kidneys equally, and IgA antibodies stick in the kidneys and set off inflammation which damages the kidneys. With more and more immune response, the healthy body cells and tissues are mistakenly attacked. For patients with IgA Nephropathy, the filtering units of the kidneys-glomeruli are damaged. Over time, patients may present some clinical manifestations.

IgA Nephropathy has no symptoms in the early stage. This disease can be silent for years, even decades. In some cases, it is first suspected when routine tests reveal protein and red blood cells in your urine.

iga symptoms

Signs and symptoms of IgA Nephropathy include:

● Cola or tea-colored urine, due to blood in the urine

● Periodic pain in the loins, abdomen, sides or flanks

● Foam after urination caused by protein in the urine

● Fatigue

● Flu and cold-like symptoms

● High blood pressure

● Swelling (edema) of the hands and feet

● Emotional changes

● Becoming more susceptible to allergies

● Lack of response to cold temperatures (mainly in children)

● Urinary tract infections (UTIs, mainly in young girls).

iga treatment

Your treatment for IgA Nephropathy will be customized to your particular needs. One or more of the following therapies may be recommended to treat your disease.

New immunosuppressive agents

They can be used according to your own condition in order to restrain excessive immune reaction in IgA Nephropathy. Through blocking undue inflammatory response, we can avoid further damages to intrinsic cells and tissues of the kidneys.

Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy

This is an innovative therapy of traditional Chinese medicine, and is applied externally without any side effects to your body. It can take effect to degrade the IgA immune complex, improve the blood circulation and remove blood stasis, anti-inflammation, provide sufficient nutrients to accelerate the repairing of kidney function as well as improve the overall immune ability of the body.

Immune clearance

To clear up the immune complexes completely, immunoadsorption, plasma exchange, and blood purification can be applied based on individual illness condition.

iga diet

4. Limit high-potassium content foods, such as bananas, tomatoes, oranges, to name a few.

5. Keep warm and avoid cold, or it will aggravate the damages of kidneys.

6. Do not eat spicy food, seafood, beef, mutton, crabs, garlic, onions, parsley, dog meat and wine, coffee, seasoning and other stimulating food and don't eat animal livers.

7. Fish and fish oil are also recommended.

Other NOT-TO-EAT foods:

1. Preserved duck egg, containing Pb, poisonous.

2. Fermented bean curd, containing hydrothion, damage to kidney.

3. Aginomoto, containing Glu, turn into coking Glu after heating, carcinogenic.

4. Instant noodles, containing preservative.

5. Melon seeds, containing unsaturated fatted acid, affecting liver function, and fattening.

6. Spinach, not for 40 years old people and above, containing oxalate, can cause zinc deficiency and calcium deficiency if combined with zinc and calcium.

7. Pork liver, 800g cholesterol per kilo, highest among animal entrails.

8. Roast beef and mutton, containing benzol, carcinogenic.

9. Pickle, sauerkraut, containing nitrosamine, carcinogenic.

iga prevention

In the early stage of IgA Nephropathy, there are no obvious symptoms even if you are at risk of this disease. Factors may increase your risk of developing IgA Nephropathy include:

▪ Age. IgA Nephropathy can affect people of all ages, including children. The peak incidence lies in the teens and 20s of people.

▪ Gender. In North America and western Europe, IgA nephropathy affects at least twice as many men as it does women.

▪ Ethnicity. IgA Nephropathy is more common in Caucasians and Asians than it is in blacks.

▪ Family history. In some cases, IgA nephropathy seems to run in families, indicating that genetic factors may contribute to the disease.

IgA Nephropathy prevention

The following steps may help reduce your chances of getting IgA Nephropathy:

● Have a good control of the blood pressure and cholesterol levels:

1. Arrange a reasonable diet, one that is low in saturated fat and rich in whole grains, vegetables and fruits.

2. Do proper physical activity regularly.

3. Keep a healthy weight, and lose weight if necessary.

4. Don't smoke and drink alcohol in moderation (no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women).

● Tell your doctor if you have a family history of IgA Nephropathy or other kinds of kidney disease, and then he can watch for signs for this disease.

iga prognosis

IgA Nephropathy is considered as a benign form of glomerulonephritis, but end-stage renal disease (ESRD) appears by 10 years in about 15% to 20 of patients and by 20 years in around 30% of patients. Factors seem to indicate that the disease is more likely to progress include:

1. Hypertension, or high blood pressure. The generally-accepted target blood pressure for IgA Nephropathy is about 125/75mmHg.

2. Elevated serum creatinine. Patients may have lost close to 50% of the kidney function when the serum creatinine level has already elevated.

3. Gross proteinuria (more than 0.4g/day).

4. High cholesterol levels caused due to low levels of protein in the blood.

5. Glomerulosclerosis. With less than 10% of average sclerosis per glomerulus, the disease may not be progress very fast or maybe at all with the right treatment.

6. IgG immune complexes in the urine.

Besides, renal biopsy has great value in evaluating patients' prognosis.
